7 Early Indicators of Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is a condition in which harmful or abnormal cells in the ovaries multiply rapidly and form a tumor. If it is not diagnosed and treated in time, then the tumor may spread outside the ovaries, causing complications. While ovarian cancer has many warning signs, the early ones can be unclear and easy to ignore. Here’s a look at some of the early warning signs of ovarian cancer.

1. Abdominal bloating
It is normal for one to feel bloated around their monthly cycle. However, if bloating lasts for many weeks, then it can be one of the early warning signs of ovarian cancer. Some may also experience frequent heartburns along with bloating.

2. Pain
Pain or cramps in the lower abdomen or pelvic region can be a warning sign of ovarian cancer. It is similar to period cramps, and many women tend to ignore it. If the pain lessens when one makes certain changes to their diet, then it may be a gastrointestinal problem. Many times, the pain is stress-related. Hence, it can be difficult to know the actual cause. However, if one experiences pain along with other symptoms of ovarian cancer, then they should consult a doctor without delay.

3. Constipation
According to experts, women should not ignore changes in their bowel movement. If one is experiencing severe constipation suddenly, then they should consult a doctor. This can be one of the early warning signs of ovarian cancer.

4. Bladder-related issues
Most of the time, experiencing pain during urination is linked to a urinary tract infection. However, bladder-related issues can be due to reproductive or gynecologic problems as well, including ovarian cancer. Some common urinary problems associated with ovarian cancer include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Pain or pressure in the bladder

5. Loss of appetite
Feeling full more quickly can also be a warning sign of ovarian cancer. One does not need to worry about an occasional feeling of fullness in the stomach, but prolonged appetite loss, nausea, upset stomach, abdominal swelling, and weight loss may indicate something serious.

6. Fatigue
If one feels fatigued even after adequate rest, then it can be a sign of cancer. In case of ovarian cancer, lack of appetite and pain in the abdomen and back may leave one feeling weary most of the time. Nagging fatigue along with abdominal pain and bladder-related issues are common causes of ovarian cancer.

7. Painful intercourse
Unexplained pain during sexual intercourse is also one of the early warning signs of ovarian cancer. Women may also experience menstrual changes, such as irregular or heavier bleeding.

If one has been experiencing one or more of these early warning signs, then it is crucial to see a doctor without delay. However, experiencing some signs does not necessarily mean that one has the condition. The doctor may suggest certain tests for the right diagnosis. Once the results are out, treatment options can be chosen accordingly.
