5 Best Natural Remedies to Get Rid of Fleas and Ticks
Spending too much time outdoors in warm weather with your pet can result in fleas and ticks. Many products in the market claim to get rid of these quickly. However, they could cause skin irritation or other health issues. Therefore, here are five natural remedies for fleas and ticks that you can try.
1. Citrus juice
You can apply the juice of a freshly squeezed orange or lemon on your pet’s fur as one of the natural remedies for fleas and ticks. However, you should avoid oils that contain citrus extracts as they could contain limonene. This substance is usually found in the extract of the rind of citrus fruits and, if ingested by your pet, can result in liver damage.
2. Shampooing and brushing
You can wash your pet using a pet shampoo for a mild flea infestation and follow that with a thorough brushing. It is best to carry out the brushing outdoors. You can use a flea comb with teeth close together, which effectively removes fleas, larvae, and eggs. Also, washing all pet bedding, furniture covers and thoroughly vacuuming the floors can be very effective. Ensure you throw the vacuum bag or the canister’s contents in a closed dustbin outdoors as these pests can continue to live inside the containers or bags.
3. Essential oils
A few essential oils, such as rose geranium oil, can be used as natural remedies for fleas and ticks. You can apply a little to your dog’s collar or shampoo to get rid of fleas and ticks. Other oils that can also be used are lavender, peppermint, lemongrass, neem, and cedarwood. However, ensure you dilute the oil with water or carrier oil such as almond oil before use. Also, as dogs have a very well-developed sense of smell, use these oils in well-ventilated spaces, and do not spray them on the face of your pet. Coconut oil can be rubbed on your pet’s coat or given orally by mixing it with their food. You can consult a vet as to which ones are safe for use on pets.
4. Garlic
You can add crushed garlic to your dog’s food. However, do not give your pet more than two cloves a day. If your pet has been diagnosed with hemolytic anemia, it is best to avoid this natural remedy. Garlic is also toxic to cats and should be avoided.
5. Vinegar
You can add a teaspoon of vinegar to your cat or dog’s drinking water to get rid of fleas and ticks. You can also spray a mixture of vinegar and water in the ratio of 1:1 on your pet’s coat.
These natural remedies for fleas and ticks are safe and would not result in any adverse reactions in your furry friends.
